What the Year 3 preset does
Year 3 drops the type size to 16 pt and raises the default to 24 questions, which is the standard grid on this site: four columns, six rows, one A4 side. The difficulty moves to Medium, so column work uses three-digit numbers rather than two.
The vertical layouts get one extra type step, which is why a Year 3 column sheet is set at 18 pt rather than 16 pt. Column arithmetic needs the digits big enough to read and align; the extra size is there for the layout, not the reading age.
Column addition and subtraction
With carrying set to Yes, about half the questions include at least one exchange, so a child meets both kinds without the sheet becoming a wall of carries. Set it to No for a first lesson on the method, when the point is the layout rather than the exchange.
Column subtraction works the same way with borrowing. Keep borrowing off for the first sheet: every digit on the top row is at least as large as the one below, so the child can focus on the direction of the subtraction and the position of the answer line.
Tables alongside the written work
The 3, 4 and 8 times tables go with Year 3 written work because they are the tables that feed into multiplying and dividing larger numbers. A mixed sheet of those three, in random order, is a five-minute starter that keeps them warm.
Print one of each — a column sheet, a tables sheet and a subtraction sheet — and you have a week of short tasks without planning anything from scratch.
Which of the three sheets first?
Start with column addition, because the layout is the same one subtraction will use and carrying is the easier of the two exchanges to see. Then column subtraction with borrowing switched off, then borrowing on. The tables sheet can run alongside all three as a five-minute warm-up rather than as the main task of the lesson.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Why is the column sheet printed larger than the tables sheet?
Vertical layouts get one extra type step so the digits in a column stay clear and aligned. A Year 3 column sheet is therefore 18 pt while a horizontal sheet is 16 pt.
How many digits should Year 3 column addition use?
Three digits is the usual point at which the method is taught, and it is what the Year 3 preset produces. The Hard difficulty moves to four digits.
Should carrying be on or off?
Off for the first sheet, so the child practises layout and place value. On once that is secure — roughly half the questions will then include an exchange.
Can I print a subtraction sheet with no borrowing?
Yes. Set Borrowing to No and every digit on the top row will be at least as large as the digit below it.
Do the sheets show the column headings?
No. The numbers are aligned in columns, but hundreds, tens and ones are not labelled. That keeps the page clean and matches how column work is usually set out in exercise books.
Can I get a mixed sheet of addition and subtraction?
Not on one sheet. The topic is either addition or subtraction. Print one of each, or use the year PDFs below which cover both.
