What the Year 4 preset does
Year 4 keeps 16 pt type and 24 questions, with difficulty at Medium. That combination fits a full mixed tables sheet on one A4 page without shrinking the digits so far that they become hard to read at the back of the room.
The preset opens on mixed times tables rather than a single table, because by this point the goal is choosing the right fact rather than reciting one table. Set Tables to practise to All if you want every table to appear equally often.
The multiplication tables check
Pupils in England sit the multiplication tables check at the end of Year 4. The check covers tables up to 12 × 12 in mixed order, so the most useful practice is exactly what this page builds: facts from every table, shuffled, with no pattern to lean on.
A short sheet three times a week beats a long sheet once a week. Twenty-four questions takes about two minutes for a fluent child and four for one who is still retrieving, which is a sensible daily slot.
Written methods alongside
Four-digit column addition and short division are the written methods that Year 4 classes usually meet next. The column sheet is set at 18 pt so the digits align cleanly, and the short division sheet uses the bus stop frame with the divisor outside the bracket.
Print a tables sheet for Monday, a column sheet for Wednesday and a division sheet for Friday, and the week covers recall and both written methods without any planning.
A week of Year 4 practice
Monday: a mixed tables sheet with every table ticked, timed. Wednesday: four-digit column addition with carrying on. Friday: short division with whole numbers. That covers recall, addition and division in three short sessions, and each answer page sits behind its own question page, so marking never needs a calculator. If there is room for a fourth session, the grid method sheet reuses the same tables in a written form.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is the multiplication tables check?
It is the check taken by Year 4 pupils in England at the end of the year. It covers times tables facts up to 12 × 12, presented in mixed order, so practice sheets should mix the tables too.
How can I practise for it at home?
Print a mixed sheet with every table ticked, time it, and keep the time the same each week. Two minutes for twenty-four facts is a reasonable target for a fluent Year 4 child.
Mixed or All for check practice?
All for a fair weekly check, because every table appears the same number of times. Mixed for a quick daily warm-up, where an uneven spread does not matter.
Why does the short division sheet use a bus stop frame?
Because that is the written layout used in English primary schools: the divisor sits outside a bracket and the quotient is written above each digit in turn.
Can I print a sheet with remainders?
Yes. Set Division gives whole numbers to No on the short division topic and some questions will have a remainder, written as r.
How many questions fit on one page at 16 pt?
Twenty or twenty-four fit comfortably. Thirty uses a five-column layout and a smaller type size; forty and sixty print over two sheets.
