Year 1
Number bonds to 10, addition without carrying, and the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. Year 1 sheets print at 18 pt with twenty questions, because a five- or six-year-old needs room to write each answer.
Year 2
Bonds to 20, two-digit column addition and subtraction, and the 2, 5 and 10 tables as mixed practice. Also 18 pt and twenty questions, with borrowing and carrying kept out of the way until the layout is secure.
Year 3
Three-digit column addition and subtraction, the 3, 4 and 8 tables, the grid method and the bus stop method. The type drops to 16 pt and a sheet carries twenty-four questions.
Year 4
All tables to 12 × 12, four-digit column methods, short division and the grid method. Still 16 pt and twenty-four questions, which is the year the multiplication tables check practice page is built around.
Year 5
Long division with two-digit divisors, the grid method at 2-digit by 2-digit, and four-digit column work. 14 pt and twenty-four questions, because the wider grid cells and the ruled working lines need the space.
Year 6
Five-digit column methods, long division with harder divisors, and mixed times tables. 14 pt and twenty-four questions, the same layout the SATs arithmetic paper expects.
