What the Year 1 preset does
Choosing Year 1 sets three things at once: twenty questions, the Easy difficulty and 18 pt type. The larger type leaves room for a child to write an answer without squashing it, and twenty questions is short enough to finish in one sitting without a battle.
The preset opens on number bonds to 10, because part-whole pairs are the most useful thing a Year 1 child can practise on paper. You can switch the topic to column addition — still without carrying — or to the 1, 2, 5 and 10 times tables without changing anything else.
Which topics suit Year 1
Number bonds to 10 come first: 7 + _ = 10, _ + 3 = 10 and 10 = 8 + _. Each fact is asked in both directions, so the twenty-question sheet never repeats a question. The sheet draws a part-whole bar under each question so the child can see the whole and the two parts rather than only the symbols. That visual disappears as the numbers get larger, so it is worth using while it is there.
Simple addition without carrying is the second step. The generator keeps every column below ten when carrying is set to No, so a child is practising place value and layout rather than a carrying rule they have not met. The 2, 5 and 10 times tables are the third option, and they work best read aloud before they are written.
Printing and handing out
Every sheet is A4 with 15 mm side margins and 12 mm top and bottom, so it prints without cropping on a school photocopier or a home printer. Page 1 is the questions, page 2 is the answer key, and the footer on page 1 tells the adult where the answers are.
For a Year 1 class, print page 1 only and keep page 2 on the desk. The questions are deliberately spacious, so there is room for a number line or a few counters on the page itself without covering the next question.
How to use it
How to use this generator
- Leave Year on 1 so the sheet stays at 18 pt with 20 questions.
- Choose Number bonds for bonds to 10, or Column addition with Carrying set to No.
- Print page 1 and keep page 2 for marking.
- Use the ready-made PDFs below if you would rather not change any settings.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How many questions should a Year 1 child do?
Twenty is plenty for one sitting at this age. If a child is losing focus after ten, print 20 but fold the page or cover the bottom half — the layout keeps the rows separate.
Should Year 1 use column addition?
Only without carrying, and only once a child is confident with the layout. The generator keeps every column sum below ten when carrying is set to No, so the method stays about place value.
What are number bonds?
Pairs of numbers that make a given total. Bonds to 10 are the pairs 0 + 10, 1 + 9, 2 + 8 and so on. They are the foundation for mental addition and subtraction later.
Can I print the answers separately?
Yes. In the print dialog choose page 2 only. The answer page has its own heading and the same layout as the questions.
Does the site use British spelling throughout?
Yes. Maths, practise, colour, metre and centimetre are used throughout, and the date line on the sheet asks for DD/MM/YYYY.
Can I use these sheets on a tablet?
The generator works on a tablet, but the design is for A4 printing. Writing answers with a finger on a scaled page is fiddly, so paper is the better option at this age.
